Malaria Parasite Detection in Peripheral Blood Images
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper investigates the possibility of computerised diagnosis of malaria and describes a method to detect malaria parasites (Plasmodium spp) in images acquired from Giemsa-stained peripheral blood samples under conventional light microscopes. Prior to processing, the images are transformed to match a reference image colour characteristics. The parasite detector utilises a Bayesian pixel classifier to mark stained pixels. The class conditional probability density functions of the stained and the non-stained classes are estimated using the nonparametric histogram method. The stained pixels are further processed to extract features (histogram, Hu moments, relative shape measurements, colour auto-correlogram) for a parasite/non-parasite classifier. A distance weighted Knearest neighbour classifier is trained with the extracted features and a detailed performance comparison is presented. We show that our method achieves 74% sensitivity, 98% specificity, 88% positive prediction value, and 95% negative prediction value for the parasite detection.

Comparative study of peripheral blood smear and quantitative buffy coat in malaria diagnosis.
A rapid test for diagnosis of malaria based on acridine orange staining of centrifuged blood samples in a microhaematocrit tube (QBC) was compared with Leishman stained thin peripheral blood smear in 287 samples. Malaria was diagnosed in 44 patients by Leishman staining technique and in 65 patients by QBC method. The QBC method allowed detection of an additional 21 cases. Thus the prevalence ra...

Background: One of the main reasons of hemorrhagic fevers is Ebola. The high rate of mortality and lack of definite treatment have been caused this infection to be a serious problem in the world. Ebola, especially in the early stages, when causes symptoms such as fever, anorexia and nausea, can be confused with malaria infection and conversely, severe malaria with Ebola. Plasmodium falciparum i...
متن کاملDepartmental audit of malaria control programme 2001-2005 north west frontier province (NWFP).
BACKGROUND Pakistan adopted the malaria control strategy with provincial commitment in 1998. Pakistan joined the Roll Back Malaria (RBM) initiative in 2001. This led to development of a 5 year roll back malaria strategy. The aim of the paper is to audit whether the malaria control programme in NWFP was able to implement strategies suggested by RBM initiative in the year 2002-2005, and its subse...
متن کاملReal-time quantitative PCR for determining the burden of Plasmodium falciparum parasites during pregnancy and infancy.
Real-time quantitative PCR (RTQ-PCR) provides a quick, accurate, and reproducible quantification of parasites. However, the value of RTQ-PCR for predicting clinical outcomes of malaria is unknown. Here, we compared RTQ-PCR to microscopy of blood smears, nested PCR (nPCR), and parasite circulating-antigen (CAg) assays for detection of Plasmodium falciparum in pregnant Kenyan women and their infa...
متن کاملPerformance of ParaHit and OptiMAL tests in the diagnosis of malaria in Mwanza, north-western Tanzania.
Malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) are non microscopic tests that provide a rapid detection of malaria infections in infected individuals. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of ParaHit and OptiMAL tests for detection of malaria infections as compared with routine microscopy. This facility-based study was carried out in Mwanza, north-western Tanzania and involved outp...
